Dealing With A Persistent Cough

If you have had a cough that lasts for more than eight weeks, it is then considered to be a chronic or persistent cough. These can be caused by a number of factors including smoking, sinusitis, respiratory conditions such as asthma or bronchitis and other acute disorders.

Honey and lemon juice

Black pepper and honey

To avoid coughing at night, grind three or four black pepper seeds to a powder and add a tablespoon of honey. Swallow this quickly as the taste is strong. The spice in the pepper will help thin the mucus and aid a cough free night.

Turmeric milk

Heat some milk with a small spoonful of turmeric powder and a little sugar. Turmeric is a natural antiseptic and will help to relieve the cough. The warmed milk promotes a good night’s sleep.

Onion and garlic soup

Garlic is a popular way to treat a chronic cough. It helps ease chest pain caused by constant coughing. Make a garlic and onion soup by adding the two to boiling water for a few minutes and flavouring with salt and pepper.

As well as these oral remedies, you should try inhaling steam to loosen any mucus. Adding mint and eucalyptus leaves will improve the beneficial effects and help you to breathe easier.

These home remedies should help the symptoms of a chronic cough, but if you notice any blood in the mucus that you cough up, you should consult your doctor as soon as possible.
